Why Vertical Blinds Remain the Go-To for Wide Windows

Vertical blinds use fabric louvres — typically 89mm or 127mm wide — that hang from a headrail and can be tilted to control light angle and drawn to one or both sides to control coverage. They are the most practical and cost-effective window treatment for wide openings, patio doors and floor-to-ceiling glazing.

Modern vertical blind fabrics have moved far beyond the bland office aesthetics of previous decades. Today's range includes textured weaves, metallic finishes, linen-effect fabrics and bold colours that suit contemporary residential interiors as well as commercial spaces.

Vertical blinds draw horizontally rather than raising vertically, which makes them ideal for doors and windows where furniture or sills would obstruct a raising blind. They can be configured to draw left, right or split from the centre — adapting to how you use the room and access the door.

For offices, clinics, schools and commercial environments, vertical blinds offer cost-effective, uniform light control across multiple windows. FR-rated fabrics, anti-glare screen materials and easy replacement of individual damaged louvres make them a practical long-term choice for high-traffic settings.

Common Problems with Poorly Made Vertical Blinds

The most frequent complaint about vertical blinds is louvres that do not tilt uniformly. When individual louvres rotate at different angles, the blind looks messy and fails to provide consistent privacy. This is caused by worn carrier stems in the headrail — a problem that occurs rapidly with budget hardware.

Drawing mechanisms that jam, stick or require excessive force are another hallmark of cheap vertical blinds. The louvres bunch up, the chain skips, and the entire blind becomes a daily annoyance. Our headrails use precision-engineered carriers that draw smoothly across the full span.

Bottom weights and chains that tangle and clatter in draughts are particularly annoying on patio doors that open frequently. We use interlocking bottom weights and spacer chains that keep louvres evenly distributed and prevent wind-related movement and noise.

Fabric quality matters more than most customers realise. Low-grade polyester louvres fray at the edges, discolour in sunlight and develop a static charge that attracts dust. Our fabrics are UV-stabilised, anti-static treated and edge-sealed to prevent fraying over years of daily use.

Louvre Sizes, Fabrics and Specialist Applications

We offer two louvre widths: 89mm and 127mm. 89mm louvres create a more refined, residential look and are the standard choice for home installations. 127mm louvres provide a bolder aesthetic, are more cost-effective on very large windows, and are the standard for commercial environments.

Fabric categories include standard polyester (cost-effective, wide colour range), textured weave (linen, hessian and basket-weave effects), metallic (silver, bronze and gold finishes), and specialist screen fabrics (varying openness factors for glare control in offices).

Blackout vertical blinds use multi-layer laminated louvres that block virtually all light when closed. They are available in both 89mm and 127mm widths and are an effective solution for bedrooms, media rooms and presentation spaces.

For patio and bi-fold doors, we configure vertical blinds to draw clear of the door opening. Asymmetric draw configurations allow you to stack louvres to one side, leaving the door completely unobstructed for garden access. Split-draw configurations divide evenly from the centre.

Fire-retardant vertical blind fabrics meeting BS 5867 Part 2 Type B are mandatory for many commercial installations including offices, schools, hospitals and hotels. We supply a full range of FR fabrics in colours and textures that look no different from standard residential options.

Curved and angled headrails are available for bay windows and non-rectangular openings. Each section is measured during the survey and the headrail is manufactured to follow the exact profile of the opening.
