What Are Tracked Shutters and Where Do They Work Best?

Tracked shutters are interior shutter panels mounted on a top-hung or bottom-rolling track system that allows them to slide horizontally across the window or door opening. Unlike hinged shutters that swing open, tracked shutters glide to one or both sides, stacking neatly when open and providing full coverage when closed.

They are the specialist solution for openings that are too wide for conventional hinged shutters — typically anything above 2.5 metres. Bi-fold doors, sliding patio doors, French doors, floor-to-ceiling windows and large picture windows are all ideal applications for tracked shutters.

Tracked shutters also serve as room dividers in open-plan spaces, allowing you to section off areas for privacy, temperature control or noise management without installing permanent walls. When not in use, the panels slide out of the way completely.

The track mechanism is engineered for smooth, quiet operation even with large, heavy panels. Our installations use commercial-grade track hardware with soft-close mechanisms and anti-derailment features, ensuring reliable performance for years of daily use.

Why Standard Window Treatments Fail on Large Openings

Curtains on large openings require enormous amounts of fabric, heavy-duty tracks and significant stack-back space. When drawn, they can obscure a quarter of the glazing on each side, reducing the natural light that the large opening was designed to provide.

Vertical blinds are a common default for patio doors, but they swing and clatter in draughts, tangle when children or pets pull them, and provide inconsistent privacy when individual slats rotate at different angles. They also look dated in modern, open-plan interiors.

Standard hinged shutters are not suitable for wide openings because the panel swing arc requires too much clearance — interfering with furniture, radiators and foot traffic. Attempting to use multiple small hinged panels creates a cluttered look and an impractical number of individual shutters to operate.

Roller blinds on large openings present different challenges: a single wide roller requires a substantial barrel and heavy-duty brackets, and very wide rollers can sag in the middle. Multiple narrow rollers side by side leave visible gaps and create an uneven appearance.

    Our Process

    1

    Free Survey & Assessment

We measure the opening, assess the structure above for track mounting, check for obstructions and discuss your requirements for access, stacking and privacy.

    2

    Track & Panel Design

We design the optimal track layout and panel configuration — including number of panels, sliding direction and stacking arrangement.

    3

    Manufacturing

Panels and track hardware are manufactured to exact specifications, with each component quality-checked before dispatch.

    4

    Track Installation

The track is securely mounted to the lintel, ceiling or wall above the opening, with concealed fixings for a clean finish.

    5

    Panel Fitting & Testing

Panels are hung, aligned and tested for smooth operation. We adjust rollers for consistent glide and demonstrate the full range of movement.

    Key Benefits

    Covers Any Width

Tracked systems can span openings of any width — from 2 metres to 8+ metres — without compromising on appearance or function.

    Thermal Barrier

When closed, tracked shutter panels create a substantial insulating layer across large glazed areas, reducing both heat loss and solar gain.

    Smooth, Quiet Operation

Commercial-grade track hardware with nylon rollers ensures whisper-quiet sliding even with large, heavy panels.

    Maintains Access

Panels slide to one side or split to both sides, maintaining full access to doors and openings when not in use.

    No Swing Clearance Needed

Unlike hinged shutters, tracked panels require zero swing clearance — ideal for rooms with furniture close to windows and doors.

    Room Divider Option

Tracked shutters can divide open-plan spaces into zones for flexible living, without permanent structural changes.

Track Systems, Panel Types and Specifications

We offer two primary track systems: top-hung and bottom-rolling. Top-hung tracks suspend panels from an overhead rail, keeping the floor threshold completely clear — essential for door openings where foot traffic crosses the threshold. Bottom-rolling tracks are suitable for windows and room dividers where a floor rail is acceptable.

Panel configurations include bypass (panels slide behind each other, stacking in layers), bi-parting (panels split and slide to both sides) and one-way slide (all panels stack to one side). The optimal configuration depends on the opening width, available stacking space and access requirements.

Panels are available with louvres (plantation style) or as solid panels. Louvred tracked shutters allow adjustable light control even when the panels are in the closed position. Solid tracked panels provide complete blackout and maximum insulation.

For bi-fold doors that open fully, our tracked shutters can be designed to clear the door swing completely when stacked, so you can still fold the doors back without obstruction. We design the stacking point during the survey to accommodate your specific door configuration.

Track profiles are available in white, silver and black finishes to match interior hardware. Concealed tracks can be recessed into the ceiling or hidden behind a pelmet for an invisible installation where the panels appear to float across the opening.

For commercial applications — including office partitions, conference room dividers and restaurant screening — we supply tracked shutters with enhanced hardware rated for frequent daily use. Motorised options are available for automated operation via remote control or building management systems.
