What Are Solid Shutters and When Are They the Right Choice?

Solid shutters — also known as solid panel shutters or board shutters — feature full panels without louvres. When closed, they create a completely opaque barrier across the window, blocking all light and providing maximum privacy. They are the original form of interior window shutter, predating the louvred plantation style by centuries.

Solid shutters are the preferred choice for bedrooms where complete blackout is essential — particularly for children's rooms, nurseries and bedrooms used by shift workers. They also excel in period properties where a traditional panel aesthetic is more appropriate than modern louvres.

Beyond privacy and light blocking, solid panels provide the highest level of thermal insulation of any shutter type. The unbroken panel surface creates an effective barrier against heat loss in winter and solar heat gain in summer, making them particularly valuable in older properties with single-glazed or poorly insulated windows.

Professional installation is critical with solid shutters because the panels are heavier than louvred alternatives and require robust hinges, secure frame fixings and precise alignment. Incorrectly fitted solid shutters will not fold back neatly, may drag on the sill, or fail to close flush.

Why Blackout Curtains and Blinds Fall Short

Blackout curtains and blinds claim to block all light, but in practice they almost always allow light to bleed around the edges — at the top, sides and bottom. This light leakage is enough to disrupt sleep, particularly for light-sensitive individuals and young children.

Blackout roller blinds fitted inside the reveal leave a visible gap between the blind edge and the window frame. Even 'made-to-measure' blinds cannot eliminate this gap entirely because the blind needs clearance to operate. Solid shutters, by contrast, close directly against the frame with overlapping edges that block light completely.

Heavy blackout curtains trap dust and allergens, require periodic cleaning, and occupy significant wall space when drawn open. In smaller rooms, the visual bulk of blackout curtains can make the space feel cramped and cluttered. Solid shutters fold back flat against the reveal, taking up minimal space.

From a security perspective, solid shutters provide a physical barrier at the window that curtains and blinds cannot match. They deter opportunistic burglars and give the impression of a well-secured property — particularly valuable for ground-floor windows and properties left unoccupied during holidays.

Materials, Panel Configurations and Finishing

We manufacture solid shutters in premium hardwood and painted MDF. Hardwood panels — typically basswood or tulipwood — are lighter and more dimensionally stable, making them ideal for larger windows. MDF panels offer a smooth, grain-free painted finish at a lower price point and are available in a wide range of colours.

Panel configurations include single-fold (one panel per side), bi-fold (two panels per side that fold against each other) and multi-fold for wider windows. The configuration depends on window width, reveal depth and how much stack-back space is available when the shutters are open.

For tier-on-tier solid shutters, upper and lower panels operate independently. This allows you to close the lower panels for privacy while leaving the upper panels open for light — combining the benefits of solid shutters with the flexibility of café style.

Raised and fielded panel designs replicate traditional Georgian and Victorian joinery, making them ideal for listed buildings and conservation areas. Flat panel designs suit more contemporary interiors. We can also incorporate moulding profiles to match existing interior architectural details.

Finishes include spray-painted lacquer in any RAL colour, hand-painted finishes for heritage properties, and natural wood stains that highlight the timber grain. All painted finishes receive multiple coats for a durable, wipeable surface.
